What a Value Proposition Isn\u2019t<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some examples (that I\u2019m 100% positive you\u2019ll recognize):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause I\u2019m worth it\u201d (L\u2019Oreal)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust do it\u201d (Nike)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThink different\u201d (Apple)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are not value proposition examples &#8211; they are <\/span><b>slogans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though they are catchy, people remember and identify them with big brands, there are a few reasons why they ultimately don\u2019t provide any value to the customer:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2192 They don\u2019t address the solution they offer;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2192 T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hey don\u2019t present any benefits, and most importantly;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2192<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They don\u2019t tell you why you should consider this brand and not the competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>unique selling proposition (USP) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the<\/span><b> positioning statement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also different than the VP. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The USP is the key factor that will emphasize what makes your business unique and better from other major players in your market. Simply put, the value proposition is part of the USP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, the positioning statement briefly describes how your product or service fills a particular need that your competitor doesn\u2019t. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that we\u2019ve established this, let\u2019s look more closely at the definition of a business value proposition. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><a id=\"b\"><\/a>B. What Defines a Powerful Value Proposition<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best value proposition definitions I came across comes from entrepreneur and venture capitalist Michael Skok, who describes it as:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA statement that explains what benefit you provide for who and how you do it uniquely well. It describes your target buyer, the problem you solve, and why you\u2019re distinctly better than the alternatives.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That being said, several businesses can offer similar products or services but you (most likely) won\u2019t find two businesses that have the same unique value proposition. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can think of this as a fingerprint &#8211; it\u2019s unique and it distinguishes you from everyone else. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A strong value proposition explains:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How your product can help the customer solve a problem they\u2019re having;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The specific benefit that the customer can get from using your product;<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main reasons why they should choose you, instead of the competition. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In case your current business value proposition does not explain at least one of these three aspects, then you need to rewrite it and emphasize the value you\u2019re offering. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help you a little bit further, here are the main criteria that you need to keep in mind when creating one:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Specificity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your potential customers need to know about the tangible business results they&#8217;ll get from using your product or service. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Clarity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. VAD<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a simple yet effective approach that Guy Kawasaki has used over and over again to describe the startups he works with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VAD is the abbreviation for <\/span><b>verb &#8211; application &#8211; differentiator<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good example here is SlideShare\u2019s value proposition:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShare what you know and love through presentations, infographics, documents and more.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><b>2. Not only that, but you also need to prove the claims you\u2019re making. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because if you don\u2019t do that, people are unlikely to really believe you and your value proposition becomes worthless. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Template:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Value offering + proof<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the proof part, you can use<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> industry statistics (the more specific, the better), or testimonials to make your expertise credible, which can be a strong alternative to using numbers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pick the right way to deliver your promises in order to appear credible, otherwise, your value proposition won\u2019t be effective.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>8. Vlaskovits &amp; Cooper&#8217;s CPS<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These two guys suggest a template called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">customer-problem-solution<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which seems pretty straight-forward. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, you need to establish the profile of the ideal customer you want to target. Then, break down the problem you\u2019re solving with your product. Finally, describe the solution you\u2019re offering. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that I\u2019ve walked you through the theory, it\u2019s time to get more practical. Let\u2019s look at some fantastic examples of companies that understand the concept of value proposition and did it right.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong><a id=\"d\"><\/a>D.
